 Scotland has long been the
inspiration of many writers and poets as it has a wide and varied landscape. Edinburgh,
the historic capital, is the main attraction for visitors, but the Highlands and the
northern isles attract many people to rugged hills and glens, to walk and fish in the
glistening lochs, and to ski in winter. Golf was invented in Scotland, and there
are numerous fine courses, notably at St Andrew's in Fife, on the East Coast. Distinctive
Scottish products include malt whisky, prime beef, butter shortbread, tweeds, tartan
cloth, and quality woollen goods.
Scotland has never been as keen on
traditional ales as England probably due to the fantastic range of whiskies
that are
produced. But there has been a massive improvement in recent years.
