Timeline

In 440 the Angles, Saxons and Jutes invaded Britain and by 556 several Kingdoms were established. Dál Riata was a Gaelic Kingdom that existed from around the 5th to the 9th centuries AD. It spanned both the western coast of Scotland and the northeastern part of Ireland, on either side of the North Channel. The Kingdom was the state of the native Britons: The Picts and the Scots The native Britons controlled Ireland, Dál Riata, Pictland, Strathclyde, North Wales and at some times West Wales, now known as Cornwall. The Angles controlled Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia. The Saxons controlled Wessex, Essex and Sussex. The Jutes controlled Kent. In 927 King Æthelstan the Glorious unites all kingdoms to become ruler of the whole of England. The Anglo Saxons ruled Britain until 1066 & the Norman invasion.

We use the larger regions in Scotland and Wales due to the smaller number of pubs and individual counties in England. Boundaries have changed over the years going back to when the different regions of the UK were ruled by their own Kings. We use the larger boundaries to group pubs.
