Coal mining
Coal mining in the UK has a long and significant history, shaping the country's industrial, economic, and social landscape for centuries. There are large coalfields covering much of the UK, some deep mines where shafts and tunnels allowed access to the coal and some close to the surface where open cast mining was used. At the time of nationalization in 1947, the UK had a significant number of coal mines. Estimates place this around 1,400 mines. While there were once thousands of coal mines in the UK, the industry has significantly contracted, and the number of active mines is now very small. The sedimentary coal layers were laid down around 300 million years ago during the Late Paleozoic Era which is the Era before when the dinosaurs were roaming the planet.

Early History (Roman Era – 18th Century)

Coal mining in Britain dates back to Roman times, with small-scale extraction mainly for heating. During the Middle Ages, coal use increased, particularly in cities like London. By the 16th and 17th centuries, coal mining expanded significantly in areas such as Northumberland, Durham, South Wales, and Scotland. Coal mining in the Black Country, an area in the West Midlands of England, played a crucial role in the region’s industrial development. The Black Country - covering towns such as Dudley, Wolverhampton, Walsall, and West Bromwich - was named for its landscape, which was darkened by heavy industry, coal dust, and smoke from ironworks. The region’s coal deposits were used as early as the medieval period, but large-scale mining took off in the 17th and 18th centuries. The area had rich seams of thick coal, often found close to the surface, making extraction relatively easy. The English Ironmaster Dud Dudley kick started the industrial revolution with the use of coal which was readily available not only as it was close to the surface but also because his father, the Earl of Dudley owned most of the coalfields in Staffordshire. Edward Sutton, 5th Baron Dudley (1567- 1643) inherited the lordship of Dudley from his father, also Edward Sutton, and was the last of his name to bear the title. He was a major landowner, mainly in Staffordshire and Worcestershire, and briefly a Member of the House of Commons of England. Lord Dudley, like his immediate ancestors, was born in Dudley Castle and the substantial estates around Dudley Castle including the manors of Dudley, Sedgley and Kingswinford were rich in coal found in seams up to ten feet thick and ironstone four feet in depth immediately under the coal and with limestone adjacent to both. He developed the mineral resources of these estates, building five blast furnaces on them. He brought Dud Dudley home from Balliol College, Oxford to manage his father's furnace and forges on Pensnett Chase. Dud developed an ironworks at Hasco Bridge on the boundary between Gornal and Himley using water from Bob’s Brook which ran down the Hill from Ruiton Windmill and past the famous Crooked House Pub.

Industrial Revolution (18th – 19th Century)

The Industrial Revolution (1750–1850) massively increased demand for coal to power steam engines, ironworks, and railways. Large coalfields were developed in places like South Wales, the Midlands, Yorkshire, and Scotland. Mining communities grew around collieries, with poor working conditions, child labour, and frequent accidents. Carbide lamps, which used a reaction between calcium carbide and water to produce acetylene gas for lighting, were widely used in mines from the early 1900s, with their peak popularity from around 1910 to 1935, and their use continued into the 1950’s. Carbide lamps were essential in industries and outdoor activities before battery-powered and LED lighting became widespread. Though largely obsolete today, they are still used by some cavers and are valued by collectors and historical re-enactors. Calcium carbide (CaC) is placed in the lower chamber of the lamp, water is stored in an upper chamber and is slowly dripped onto the carbide. The reaction between calcium carbide and water produces acetylene gas (CH). The acetylene gas is directed to a burner nozzle and ignited, producing a bright, white flame. Open-flame lamps frequently caused devastating explosions and the early 19th century saw the development of various safety lamps, most notably those by Sir Humphry Davy and George Stephenson. Davy’s "Davy lamp" used a wire gauze to surround the flame, preventing the heat from igniting external gases. The gauze dissipated the heat, keeping it below the ignition point of methane. George Stephenson developed a lamp that also aimed to prevent external gas ignition, with his own variations on design. By the early 19th century, the Black Country was one of the most industrialised areas in Britain, producing vast quantities of coal, iron, steel, and limestone. Mining conditions were harsh, with frequent accidents, flooding, and poor ventilation. Child labour was common in the mines.

Peak and Nationalization (20th Century)

Coal production peaked in 1913 at around 292 million tonnes, with over a million miners employed. Coal pits were scattered throughout the landscape, with small independent collieries operating alongside larger mines. The industry was vital during both World Wars, fuelling Britain’s war effort. Many colliery accidents were blamed on damaged or poorly maintained lamps. Inspectors often recorded incidents where cracked glass or torn gauze led to explosions. The Coal Mines Act (1911) introduced stricter regulations, requiring lamps to be regularly inspected. Many mines struggled with flooding and increasing costs, leading to closures and in 1947, the coal industry was nationalised under the National Coal Board (NCB) to improve safety and efficiency.

Decline (1950s – 1990s)

The 1950s–60s saw a decline due to competition from oil and natural gas. Lamp records in coal mines included logs where damage, repairs, and inspections were noted. Any faulty lamps were removed from use. By the 1980s, coal mining became politically contentious, particularly under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government. The UK miners' strike of 1984-85 was a defining moment, as the government moved to close unprofitable mines, leading to large-scale protests. By the 1990s, most deep mines were closed due to declining profitability and environmental concerns.

21st Century and Present Day

The last deep coal mine, Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire, closed in 2015. A few open-cast (surface) mines operated until recently, but the UK's coal industry is now virtually extinct. The government committed to phasing out coal-fired power stations by 2024 as part of its climate change strategy.

Legacy

Former coal mining communities, particularly in northern England, South Wales, and Scotland, have struggled with economic decline. Some former mining areas have been regenerated, while others remain deprived. The National Coal Mining Museum in Yorkshire preserves mining history and culture.
