Surrey is a low-lying area traversed from west to east by the chalk hills of the North Downs, which
extend into Kent. Leith Hill, the highest point in the Surrey Hills, offers panoramic views of the
surrounding countryside, where winding lanes lead to tranquil villages.
Many historic houses and gardens are open to the public, among them the Regency villa of
Polesden Lacey and the 18th-century gardens of Painshill Park. Epsom racecourse is home to
'the Derby' which has been run since 1780.
