Sadly, many pubs have closed over the years. Some because they were just too rural to be able to generate enough trade, some because they were poorly run, some were surplus to requirements for the big pubco’s and no doubt over the years the changing habit of drinking from home coupled with stronger drink drive laws has meant a massive drop in some of our great eating and drinking establishments. Whilst it shouldn’t necessarily trouble us because we only list places that we’d recommend, we would very much prefer it if the bad pubs changed to become good pubs rather than disappear forever. Our criteria for being listed is wide and varied because our view has always been if you’d recommend it to a friend for any reason then why not tell others. We are however very sad to see some great old historic and quality establishments fall by the wayside with no chance of being restored to their former glories. Below is a list of those inns that we have removed and the reason why it was.

	Traditional old pub with buildings on site reputed to be 15th century. Close to the River Wye and the magnificent Goodrich Castle, the Anchor serves ale straight from the wall, is a restaurant at weekends and hosts folk nights on Wednesdays.

	Small two roomed family run pub dating back to 1780 with a warm welcome, serving a selection of real ales. One of the oldest pubs in the lovely spa town of Buxton which displays a few memento's of the World's greatest footballer - Sir Stanley Matthews.

	Wonderful Cotswold inn serving excellent food with stunning service to go with it. The Boot appears to be a typical small country pub from the outside but once inside you'll be amazed to find a stunning collection of boots & shoes donated by the rich & famous. From the Great Sir Stanley Matthew's to Jeremy Clarkson and Ian Botham and including a flipper donated by Michael Heseltine MP. Located very conveniently just off the A40 and a short drive from Oxford, the Boot is well worth a visit.

	Victorian real ale pub, formerly two Georgian cottages and a wool shop. Friendly staff and locals with up to 8 different real ales every week, regular beer festivals and good quality food. The Brown Bear has won many awards and holds its own beer festivals. A must for any one who likes real ale. Look out for the fine collection of pump clips on the ceiling.

	Amazing pub close to the city centre. Doesn't look the most inviting of places from the outside, but step inside and go back in time. The decor dates back to the times when simple things like seats were made from quality materials. The Cock & Bottle is the only pub in Britain owned by the Church and all the staff are volunteers. The welcome is as genuine as they come and they serve good ales as well.

	If you're looking for a pub with a canal boat inside then this is the one for you. The pub is part of the Little Pub Company which serves it's own ale 'Lumphammer' and the food is good wholesome Black Country fayre. Most Little Pub Company pubs have an Irish theme as the creator Colm O'Rourke is an Irishman.

	Superb thatched country inn named after Izaak Walton, a Staffordshire author who wrote 'The Complete Angler' - regarded as the fisherman's Bible. The Izaak Walton has a real homely feel, good quality ales and a first class food menu with first class service.

	Award winning 16th Century little restaurant, formerly a stable with oak beamed ceilings, in what feels like the front room of somebody's house. The food is Superb.
