Birthplaces of Famous Brits
Nationality refers to the legal relationship between an individual and the United Kingdom. It encompasses several different statuses, reflecting the historical evolution of the UK, its empire, and its relationships with former colonies. The primary forms of British nationality are linked to the ability to live and work in the UK and the possession of British citizenship. Those who are British citizens usually have the right of abode, meaning they can reside in the UK without any immigration restrictions. Most people who are British citizens also hold a British passport. There are many British nationals that were born abroad to British parents who were either travelling or working overseas at the time and many people take out citizenship of other countries when they move abroad, often for work reasons and these days those people often hold dual citizenship. Most British people remain proud of the nation when they move abroad. Some such as Rudyard Kipling are born to British parents working overseas, some such as the boxer Lennox Lewis are born in the UK but move abroad with parents and some such as Alexander Graham Bell are born in the UK but move overseas to follow a career path. We wouldn’t want to deny any of these their place as a famous British person in the same way the Americans think they invented the telephone and the helicopter - but we know that Alexander Graham Bell was actually Scottish and Igor Sikorsky was Ukrainian, although he didn’t take out American citizenship until he was 39 years old as he fled Ukraine when it was part of the Russian empire and he didn’t invent the helicopter anyway. At least Britain can claim Freddie Mercury was British as Zanzibar was under British protection when he was born there. Many Brits are descended from Danes, Germans, Italians and French anyway so whose counting? There are several ways to acquire British citizenship: By birth: Individuals born in the UK to at least one British citizen or settled parent. By descent: Individuals born abroad to British citizen parents may inherit citizenship, depending on specific circumstances. By naturalisation: A person can apply for citizenship after meeting residence and other legal requirements, such as good character and knowledge of life in the UK. By registration: Certain individuals may qualify for citizenship through a streamlined process, such as children of British citizens born abroad or individuals with British Overseas Territory citizenship.
