Edwardian Era (1901 - 1914)

King Edward VII succeeded Queen Victoria. A time of relative peace and social elegance, but also rising inequality. The rise of suffragettes campaigning for women’s right to vote. Labour Party founded (1900), gaining political power.

World War I (1914 - 1918)

Britain joined the war after Germany invaded Belgium. Over 900,000 British soldiers died. Led to huge changes in society, gender roles and class structures. Women entered the workforce in large numbers.

Interwar (1918 - 1939)

1918: Some women over 30 got the vote; equal suffrage came in 1928. The Great Depression (1930s) caused mass unemployment and hardship. Rise of fascism in Europe led to World War II.

World War II (1939 - 1945)

Britain fought against Nazi Germany, led by Winston Churchill from 1940. Cities like London, Newcastle, Liverpool and Coventry were bombed in the Blitz. Victory in 1945, but at a high cost - rationing, debt and destruction.

Post-War Britain (1945 - 1979)

Welfare State and NHS Labour government (1945) created the National Health Service (NHS). Free healthcare, welfare benefits and council housing were introduced. Britain transitioned from empire to a more egalitarian society. End of the Empire India gained independence in 1947. Decolonisation continued through Africa, the Caribbean and Asia. Britain became a multicultural society as many people from former colonies migrated.

1960s Social Revolution

The "Swinging Sixties": new music (The Beatles), fashion, sexual freedom. Laws were passed for abortion, homosexuality and divorce reform. Women and minorities began demanding greater equality.

Thatcher Era and Late 20th Century (1979 - 1997)

Margaret Thatcher (PM 1979 - 1990) Britain’s first female Prime Minister. Introduced free-market reforms, privatisation and reduced union power. 21st Century Britain (1997 - present)

Politics Tony Blair’s Labour introduced reforms and led Britain into the Iraq War. David Cameron’s Conservative government held the EU referendum in 2016.
